Circular Economy in Building Design

In a recent ARKANCE Think.Future Podcast Johanne Gallagher, Strategy Delivery Lead for Sustainability at ARKANCE hosted Professor Leoni Barner and Dr. Kavita Gonsalves, two experts deeply involved in sustainable development and circular economy. Their conversation revolved around their collaborative project aimed at creating a roadmap for the building sector to become circular. This article captures the essence of their dialogue, highlighting key insights and experiences from their journey.

Circular economy will only work if we collaborate. If every stakeholder is collaborating, otherwise we won't be able to really establish circular economy in a sector.

Professor Leonie Barner

Background and Expertise

Professor Leoni Barner, with a PhD in physical chemistry, has a rich background in polymer chemistry and material science. Her interest in sustainability led her to focus on sustainable development and circular economy, using tools like life cycle assessment and systems thinking. She emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, which was pivotal in her role as the research director at the Center for a Waste-Free World.

Dr. Kavita Gonsalves, an architect by training, has been inspired by sustainable architecture since her early career. Her work has been influenced by Laurie Baker, a British-born Indian architect known for his sustainable designs using local materials. Kavita pursued advanced studies in architecture, energy, and environmental studies, and later completed a PhD focusing on technology and social sustainability. She currently leads sustainable design for Asia Pacific at Populous, a firm specializing in sports infrastructure and entertainment venues.

 The Collaborative Project

The primary research question of their project is to develop a roadmap for the building sector to become circular. This involves identifying the necessary steps and aspects to establish a circular economy within the sector. Leoni and Kavita's collaboration began through the Building 4.0 CRC, specifically Project 48, which focuses on scoping circular economy for Australia.

Collaboration and Vision

Kavita highlighted the importance of early collaboration and vision in the success of their case study, the Commbank Stadium. "What was really different with this particular project was Langley's vision... They brought experts in the field right from the beginning," she explained. This collaborative approach ensured that all stakeholders, including designers, builders, and material suppliers, were involved from the outset, leading to a successful and timely completion of the project.

Sustainable Practices

Leoni shared her observations from visiting the Commbank Stadium, noting the sustainable practices in place. "They are always looking for possibilities to run the stadium in an even more sustainable fashion," she remarked. The stadium's design allows for easy maintenance and adaptability, with features like bolted sections for quick reconfiguration and efficient energy and water management systems.

Future Vision

Both Leoni and Kavita expressed excitement about the future of circular economy in building design. Leoni emphasized the need for collaboration, stating, "No company can do it on its own. They all will have to collaborate with each other to really create a circular economy." Kavita added, "We need to think about how materials are procured, how systems are designed for them, and how they are deconstructed." She also stressed the importance of preserving biodiversity and working with nature, envisioning a future where society thrives in harmony with the environment.

Conclusion

The discussion with Leoni and Kavita underscored the significance of collaboration, vision, and sustainable practices in advancing circular economy in the building sector. Their project serves as a model for future initiatives, demonstrating that with the right approach, it is possible to create buildings that are not only functional and cost-effective but also environmentally sustainable. As they continue their work, their insights and experiences will undoubtedly inspire further innovation and progress in the field.
